White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV)
WSSV is the most economically destructive shrimp virus on record, with 100% mortality possible within 3–10 days of clinical onset.
Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP)
EHP is a hepatopancreas-targeting microsporidian that does not cause mass mortality but stunts growth — turning a 100-day cycle into a 140-day cycle with sub-economic ABW.
Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND / EMS)
AHPND (formerly EMS) is an early-stage shrimp disease caused by toxin-producing Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Mortality reaches 100% within 30–35 days of stocking, before harvest is possible.
Infectious Hypodermal and Haematopoietic Necrosis Virus (IHHNV)
IHHNV is a small parvovirus that rarely kills shrimp but stunts growth and deforms juveniles — Runt Deformity Syndrome reduces harvest weight 10–30% and destroys size-grade premiums.
Taura Syndrome Virus (TSV)
TSV is a picornavirus that strikes vannamei post-larvae and juveniles, causing reddish-tail discolouration, soft shells and 40–90% mortality in the acute phase.
Yellow Head Disease (YHV)
Yellow Head Disease (YHD) is one of the three most destructive shrimp viruses on record — a pale-yellow cephalothorax, brief feed surge then collapse, and 100% pond mortality within 3–5 days of clinical onset.
Vibriosis (luminescent and non-luminescent)
The most common bacterial complex in shrimp ponds — often opportunistic on top of viral or stress damage.
Ichthyophthiriasis (White Spot Disease in Fish)
The 'white spot' of freshwater fish — a ciliate parasite, completely distinct from shrimp WSSV.
Columnaris (Cotton Wool Disease)
Skin and gill bacterial infection in warm freshwater fish — fast onset above 25°C.
Saprolegniasis (Fungal Cotton Wool)
Saprolegniasis is an opportunistic oomycete (water-mould) infection that follows handling injuries, temperature shock or egg damage — visible as cotton-wool tufts on skin, fins or eggs.
Streptococcosis in Tilapia
Streptococcosis is the leading cause of mortality in commercial tilapia farms worldwide — 30–80% losses in untreated outbreaks, with characteristic erratic spiral swimming, unilateral exophthalmia, and a clear link to water temperatures above 27°C.
