Pond Water Quality Monitoring — the parameters that actually matter

Water quality is responsible for ~60% of avoidable shrimp mortality and ~70% of slow-growth events. Monitoring it well — not exhaustively — is the highest-leverage daily habit on any farm.

The seven parameters worth tracking daily

Dissolved oxygen (DO, target ≥4.0 mg/L morning), pH (target 7.8-8.4), temperature, salinity, total ammonia nitrogen (TAN, target <1 mg/L), alkalinity (target 100-150 mg/L), and turbidity. Add nitrite weekly. Anything else is bonus and adds noise.

Sampling cadence

Morning (06:00-07:00): DO + pH + temp — this is when DO is lowest. Afternoon (14:00-15:00): DO + pH (highest swing) + salinity. Weekly: full panel including TAN, alkalinity, turbidity. Critical thresholds should trigger immediate intervention, not a log entry.
