What water temperature range is best for shrimp growth?
Temperature is the most under-monitored parameter in Indian shrimp ponds. Farmers log DO and pH daily but sometimes only spot-check temperature. This is a mistake: every 1°C above optimum roughly doubles metabolic demand and cuts DO saturation. Get temperature right and everything else — feed conversion, molting, disease resistance — falls into place.
For vannamei (Litopenaeus vannamei): 28–32°C is optimal, 25–34°C is tolerable, below 22°C or above 34°C is stressful, below 15°C or above 36°C is lethal. Monodon prefers 26–30°C. Log temperature at 05:30 (min) and 14:00 (max) daily.

Fix the measurement point
Measure at 30–50 cm depth, always the same spot near the aerator. Surface temperature can be 3–5°C higher than the shrimp's actual habitat. A digital probe on a rope is cheaper and more consistent than a thermometer dip.

Track the daily swing
Aim for a diurnal range below 4°C. Swings above 6°C — common in shallow (<1.2 m) ponds during Indian summers — stress shrimp even when both extremes are 'safe' on paper.

Apply the air–water delta-T rule
If air temperature is 5°C higher than water, cut feed 20% (heat-stressed shrimp don't eat). If air is 5°C cooler, expect DO to drop overnight — pre-aerate from sunset.

Cool a hot pond
Deepen to 1.5 m minimum. Run aerators through peak heat (12:00–15:00) — the evaporative cooling drops water temp 1–2°C. Shade cloth over 20–30% of the pond helps in April–May peaks (Andhra, Tamil Nadu).

Warm a cold pond
Winter monodon ponds in West Bengal/Odisha can drop below 20°C. Reduce feed 30%, extend feed intervals, avoid partial harvests that stress shrimp, and if possible use dark HDPE liners to absorb solar heat.

Adjust feed protein to temperature
Above 32°C: drop feed to 30–32% CP (crude protein) to reduce metabolic heat. Below 24°C: shrimp digest slowly — reduce total ration by 30% but keep protein high.

- Water temperature holds above 34°C for more than 6 hours with no cooling response.
- Water temperature drops below 18°C during a cold snap — mortality risk is real within 48 hours.
- Diurnal swing exceeds 6°C for 3+ consecutive days.
- Shrimp are lethargic, molting is disrupted, or feed intake drops 40%+ without other cause.
